When it comes to homeschooling your children, you can make it fun by adding in a first day back tradition.

There are a ton of ideas out there but one that we have done and the kids have loved is simple but yet exciting!

Just because your kiddos school from the kitchen table or the couch in their pajamas doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with your first day back!

Here are some ideas that I hope inspire you to make your first day special and a memorable not only for you but for your children as well.

Now, if you aren’t into cooking you could totally pick up fun flavored donuts or even take them out for breakfast!

If you do love to cook, especially sourdough, try these amazing cinnamon rolls from Farmhouse on Boone! They never disappoint.

For the icing recipe I used powdered sugar and milk mixed together to form a glaze instead of the cream cheese because my daughter isn’t a fan of lots of icing.

I make these for special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas morning and our first day back to doing lessons.

If I’m honest, I sometimes make them just because. They are just that good!

Waking up before the kids to prepare the special breakfast will invoke a sense of excitement for your children so try your best to make it a surprise!

The morning I made these the kids could smell the cinnamon in the house but they had no idea until it was time to come eat.

They met the table with shrills of delight knowing mama had made their favorite dish. Never underestimate the power of food haha! It doesn’t take much to delight the heart of your children.

For this idea, you can do it two ways. You can make each child their own little basket, or, you can do a group basket which is what I have done.

Some moms even gift wrap the new goodies for the first day. It’s totally up to you, your budget and the time you have in this season to put everything together.

Here are some ideas to fill your baskets with. Some of them I purchased and loved and others are super budget friendly ideas to make it easy on you.

New markers, pencils, crayons, or paints are fun to add to the baskets. Especially if you have artsy kids who love creating!

This part of your basket can be budget friendly! Most stores have sales on back to school supplies making items even cheaper.

If you have a local Dollar Tree, they actually have a lot in the art supply section, so go check them out!

One of our favorites we purchased this year is this poem book called Sing a Song of Seasons from Amazon. It’s a large and heavy book with beautiful illustrations giving us a poem to read each day.

When you shop for books, find some that will go with your lessons and some for fun. That way you can utilize them in many ways interwoven into the topics discussed.

If you haven’t seen these Smart Games, they are a must have! I purchased this heart shaped one from Amazon but they have more that are categorized by age.

My kids have really enjoyed playing with the faux jewel pieces, and it teaches problem solving which is a plus!

Wanting something to keep the littles entertained while doing lessons? These are it!

Other items below, that I purchased from Amazon, is this Kid’s Charades game and Busy Ideas for Bored Kids. We haven’t used them yet but look forward to this coming school year! (Edit to add: We have since used both and the kids LOVE them!)

Playdough, pom poms, popsicle sticks, beans, straws, paper plates and glue to name a few.

These are easy to find and inexpensive items to get your children’s creative juices flowing while simultaneously keeping them busy!

I love to add things like this to our morning baskets so the kids are busy while I read over the lessons. Busy hands and minds equal quiet and focus!

When it comes to starting back up, even if you school year round and you’re switching things up, you can make the transition fun!

You don’t need to overthink it.

This is just a simple but fun way to show your love to your children by making the start of something new exciting.

With a simple yummy breakfast and a basket full of goodies, turn your 1st day of homeschooling into a memory you and your children will cherish forever.
