Are We Doing Church Correctly? 3 Scriptures That Will Make You Think Twice.
This post, on church, may be controversial and odd for some. When you read this, keep your own opinions to the side until you read what the bible has to say. Our whole lives, Christians have been taught so many things, many from the bible, but a lot of those things have been from opinions from others. This is why it is so important to know the word for yourself with guidance from Holy Spirit since he is , after all, our teacher.
When you think of the word church, what comes to mind first? Since my readers come from different Christian denominational backgrounds, let me describe in different ways. Do you see church as this beautiful cathedral that is filled with this Holy awe when you walk in. Or a building where hundreds gather to hear the word of God. Do you see it as God’s house, and feel completely filled when leaving. Are you excited to go to this church where you can experience God and feel Him at the alter? Or do you love the thought of church for the time of worship that takes place with fellow believers? Maybe church is where you take communion and practice other religious things.
I’m going to say something that Holy Spirit has been showing me.
God’s house is not a church building.

What Does the Bible Say About Church?
Let’s first look to Merriam Webster’s definition of the definition of church. It states that church is a building for public and especially Christian worship. Now on to the Hebrew definition. This is why context to the bible scriptures is so important. You must know the history and the context of the verses to understand them better. Holy Spirit will help you, because He is our teacher, but knowing biblical history is super important.
So in the Hebrew language, the word for church is ekklasia, and it is a gathering of people. Here, you can read more about the translations in Hebrew and the Greek. After reading that little bit, do you understand now why the English language needs to be traced back to the roots of the word and context it was set, in history.
In America, and in other countries, we have adapted the old English/Greek version of the word church for what our church is today. Instead we should be seeking the origin of that word in Hebrew. Why are we following the traditions of man? Going to a church building weekly did not stem from Christ’s original church plan, rather from the church building origins.
Let’s look at the first church and what they did via scripture.
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
Acts 2:42-47
All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.
They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
So you can see here, after Jesus left, the disciples waited for Holy Spirit to come and fill them for the work of the Lord. In Acts 2:42-47 you can see what took place afterwards. They devoted themselves to the teaching, fellowship, prayer and breaking of bread. The Lord added to their number DAILY!
That part jumps off the page. Are we adding to our number daily church? Are we devoting ourselves to true fellowship? If you read on you will see how things were done and where the teachings were taught.
When he realized this, he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were gathered for prayer.
Acts 12:12

The “home of”, “gathered” for prayer. This is a constant theme in the New Testament of how the early believers gathered. They gathered with each other, were very close, and the Lord added to their numbers. Could we be missing something? These disciples were constantly on the move to share the gospel with those around them. God was with them!
Have we grown so complacent and comfortable that we have squashed the fire of Holy Spirit to work in and through us? Following JESUS will never be comfortable. IF at any time it becomes this way for you, question it! This post will end here, but I want you to study for yourself the book of Acts, and then the entire New Testament. The enemy has been keeping us in “church, business as usual” for far to long. It is time the scales fall off in Jesus name to the truth of what Jesus has actually called His people to do.
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20 NLT
(The verse above is for ALL born again believers who have received the Holy Spirit. Not just for the Pastors, Evangelists, Apostles, Teachers, Prophets but ALL believers!)
